As we know that, pollution has been increasing for the past few years, so to reduce the pollution which is caused by diesel and petrol vehicles and to promote electric or hybrid vehicles in India, the Union Cabinet has launched PM E Drive Scheme 2024 with a budget of Rs. 10,900 Crore. This scheme has been replaced by the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid & Electric Vehicles (FAME) Scheme. The scheme will provide subsidies on purchasing of electric two-wheelers, electric three-wheelers, electric trucks and buses as well as electric ambulances.
Along with this 88,500 electric vehicle chargers will be setup under the scheme. The scheme will support 24.79 lakh e-2Ws, 3.16 lakh e-3Ws, and 14,028 e-buses. Key allocations include Rs. 4,391 crore for 14,028 electric buses in nine major cities, Rs. 500 crore each for electric trucks and ambulances, and Rs. 2,000 crore for public EV charging stations. Additionally, Rs. 780 crore is set aside to modernize test agencies for green mobility technology. The government has approved the PM-eBus Sewa-Payment Security Mechanism scheme, which will deploy over 38,000 electric buses by 2028-29 with a budget of Rs. 3,435 crore.

PM E Drive Scheme Revised FAME
Union Cabinet has launched PM Electric Drive Scheme which is replaced by the Revised FAME Scheme. This scheme aims to promote the adoption of electric vehicles across India. The first phase of the FAME scheme (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid & Electric Vehicles) was launched in 2015 with an outlay of Rs. 895 crore for five years, ending in 2018. It was followed by FAME 2 in 2019, with an initial allocation of Rs. 10,000 crore for three years, set to end in 2022. To further boost electric mobility, FAME 2 was extended until March 2024, with an additional outlay of Rs. 1,500 crore.

FAME 2 aimed to support 10 lakh electric two-wheelers, 5 lakh three-wheelers, 55,000 four-wheelers, and 7,000 buses, but achieved 11.70 lakh two-wheelers, 1.30 lakh three-wheelers, 16,631 four-wheelers, and 4,766 buses. After its expiry, the government launched EMPS 2024 with Rs. 778 crore, extending it until September.
